The Indian cricket team has been hit by an injury crisis, with several of their first-choice players sidelined as they gear up for a two-match Test series in Sri Lanka. On Sunday, top BCCI officials, including the board’s Center Of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman, addressed the growing spate of injuries.
Laxman defended the CoE amid criticism over the slow recovery of players.

The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana and B Sai are among those currently recuperating from various injuries at the CoE.
These concerns are not new for the team, as injuries appear to have become a recurring issue, with India often forced to field an eleven without one or more of their first-choice players.
While Laxman cited stringent fitness parameters among the reasons for slow recovery, a report claims that financial pressures and IPL franchises could be forcing their star players to continue playing despite the threat of injuries.
“Too much cricket. The human body has its load limits. Overuse and stress injuries, especially in older players, are unpredictable in terms of return to play. Players play through injuries during IPL due to franchise and financial pressures and then are dumped onto unsuspecting COE physios,” A CoE source was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
“The team physios and COE physios are competent and conscientious, and are keeping “player safety as their top priority. This, of course, makes it difficult for selectors, coaches, and captains,” the source added.
Batting legend Laxman said it’s not possible for players to always meet the expected recovery timelines.
“…I think it’s very important to understand that the guidelines and the timelines are given based on what you expect. But it’s the human body. It is not a machine where the timelines will always be met. So there’s a continuous process of understanding how a player is progressing and based on that, the load is increased. So that’s a process from the time they are diagnosed with the injury to the time they leave the CoE and declare fit,” Laxman told reporters in Bengaluru.
