Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei on Monday appointed a new chief of the armed forces and a new commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), putting his stamp on the country’s military leadership amid the ongoing war with the United States.

Major General Ali Abdollahi was named chief of staff of the armed forces, while Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi was appointed commander-in-chief of the IRGC with the rank of major general, according to a statement on Khamenei’s website.

US President Donald Trump said Washington will seek compensation from Iran, after Tehran demanded reimbursement for damage caused by US and Israeli attacks during the months-long war.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said he had instructed US representatives to include compensation demands in any future negotiations. He also called for payments to families of people killed or wounded in conflicts involving Iran, including those affected by the USS Cole attack and recent unrest in Iran.

Rear Admiral Ali Ozmaei was named IRGC Navy commander, while former IRGC intelligence chief Hossein Taeb was appointed commander of the Basij paramilitary force.

Iran has ruled out future negotiations with the Trump administration, with an adviser to Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf saying Tehran will wait until Donald Trump’s term ends on January 20, 2029.

Ghalibaf adviser Majid Shakeri said Trump would not reach an agreement with Iran and called for “strategic patience” instead of war or a deal. Iran’s reported demands include compensation, the release of frozen assets and the withdrawal of US forces.

Pakistan’s Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday and briefed him on Pakistan’s recently signed defence agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Details of the proposed legislation will be reviewed at upcoming committee meetings.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has called for the restoration of free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz during a phone call with Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said Takaichi said Oman would consult countries using the key waterway and respect their views. The call came as Oman and Iran continue negotiations over transit through Hormuz, with wider US-Iran talks remaining stalled.

Iranian Revolutionary Guards spokesman Hossein Mohbi said Iranian missiles have gained new guidance and course-changing capabilities. He called the recent war an “exceptional experience” in using new technologies and claimed US forces failed despite deploying advanced technology.

Pakistan has invited Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to Islamabad for talks, Iran said on Monday. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the visit would take place “at an appropriate time”, calling reciprocal visits part of the growing ties between the two neighbouring countries.

A US official told Reuters that an agreement between Iran and Oman was close and could soon allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen. Tehran, however, continues to link reopening to its demands on Washington.

People familiar with the Iran-Oman discussions said ships could transit without paying fees or tolls during the proposed interim arrangement. The terms of the agreement could still change.

Iran and Oman are working on a temporary arrangement that would establish new shipping lanes through the Strait. Under the proposed plan, ships would enter near Iran and exit near Oman.

An Iranian lawmaker said vessels belonging to “hostile countries” could be barred from transiting the Strait under the proposed plan. Countries that caused damage to Iran could also be required to compensate Tehran.

The US has more than 20 warships deployed in the Middle East to support military missions, including the “strict enforcement” of its blockade against Iran, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in an X post. CENTCOM said that, as of August 9, it had redirected 55 commercial vessels, disabled two and boarded two to ensure compliance. The command shared an image of sailors aboard the USS Ross, one of the deployed warships.

Iran’s parliament’s National Security Committee has approved the “general outlines” of a plan to manage shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, according to state broadcaster reports.
