In a conversation with Vickey Lalwani, Pooja Bedi said that her perspective on marriage has changed a lot over the years. While she once believed in the traditional idea of lifelong marriage, her experiences have since changed how she views the institution. Now, despite being engaged to Maneck for eight years, she has no plans to marry.
“Today I’m in a relationship with Maneck, and I’ve been engaged for eight years. And people ask, so when are you getting married, very excitedly. And I say, I’m not getting married. Engagement is when a person puts a ring on your finger and says, I want to be married to you. Which basically says, I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side, as a companion, as your lover, as your husband, as a father of your children. The commitment is enough. After the commitment is there, all you’re really doing is signing a piece of paper and getting the government involved in your affair,” she explained.
‘My Assets Go To My Kids, His Assets Go To His Kids’: Pooja Bedi
Pooja said changing attitudes toward marriage have made it easier for couples to choose what works for them. After eight years with Maneck, she prefers staying unmarried, saying it keeps their financial affairs simpler too.
“It is so much easier. I’ve been married, I’ve been divorced, I have two children. He’s been married, he’s been divorced, he has kids too. In terms of simple things, like in terms of your assets, it’s so simple. My assets go to my kids, his assets go to his kids. I’m earning, he’s earning, we’re both independent. I don’t need him for security’s sake. He doesn’t need me for financial security,” she said.
“It’s beautiful because we are literally together because we want to be together, not because we’re bound to be together, and especially not under law. Our families love each other, my kids love him. I love his family. So for me, we are as good as together forever,” she said.
She also mentioned that being in this space of engagement keeps them on their toes, and allows them to maintain the care and affection she fears could change after marriage.
‘We Are As Good As Married,’ Says Pooja Bedi
“We’re not living in. We are as good as married without being married. So he’s based in Goa, I’m based in Bombay, and he comes to stay half the month, and then for a few days of the month I’ll go there, then we have space as well, which is very important,” she said.
When asked whether this means that she and Maneck will never get married, the actress replied, “No, never.” When asked about their 2019 engagement, when she had said she wanted to marry Maneck, Pooja said her perspective had changed over time.
“The intention was to get married, and the reality of what marriage actually looks to us. It didn’t fit our vision for what we want in life, in terms of everything. I don’t want to be contracted to somebody. I’ve been there, done that. I believe everyone should be married. I think marriage is a wonderful space, and it’s just I’ve been there, done that. I don’t see the need to do that.
