Fast bowler Gurnoor Brar is part of India’s Test squad for the two-match series against Sri Lanka, and on Saturday (August 8), the young pacer from Punjab got a chance to showcase his batting skills.

The left-handed batter walked out to bat at No. 11 for India on Day 2 of the ongoing three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo and played an unbeaten knock of 36 runs off just 18 balls. During his stay at the crease, he hammered two fours and four sixes and added 51 runs off 30 balls with centurion Devdutt Padikkal (142*).

Brar, who has played six ODIs for India since making his international debut in June 2026 against Afghanistan, smashed four sixes in the final over of the second day’s play, which was bowled by spinner Dilum Sudeera.

Brar hit sixes off the second, third, fifth and sixth balls of the 90th over of India’s innings to take the team’s total past the 350-run mark and reduce the deficit to just six runs.

Brar’s late blitz impressed India head coach Gautam Gambhir, who was seen giving the young fast bowler a standing ovation.

Brar’s superb show with the bat on Saturday could earn him a place in India’s playing XI for the series opener in Galle, starting August 15.

Mohammed Siraj is certain to feature for India in the first Test at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, but in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, there is a three-way battle for the second pacer’s spot between Brar, Prasidh Krishna and Auqib Nabi.

Nabi is the better batter among the three, but the chances of the 29-year-old fast bowler from Jammu and Kashmir making his Test debut in Galle appear slim, as he did not bowl for India in the first innings of the ongoing warm-up match.

Prasidh, meanwhile, is the most experienced of the three fast bowlers and has represented India in all three formats. However, he is yet to establish himself as a regular member of the senior men’s team despite making his international debut in 2021.
