Gujarat Titans batter Shahrukh Khan has offered a close-up assessment of Shubman Gill’s growth as a leader, praising the Indian Test and ODI captain’s tactical instincts and ability to constantly assess the game.
Having shared the Gujarat Titans dressing room with Gill, Shahrukh has seen the 26-year-old transition from an emerging IPL leader to the captain of India. According to the Tamil Nadu batter, much of Gill’s leadership ability is visible only to those who spend significant time around him at training and during matches.

“Obviously, as a captain, he has grown immensely from captaining Gujarat Titans to captaining the country’s Test side. I don’t have to explain how good a captain he is. Because we saw the series in England, the way he captained, how aggressive he was whenever the team needed him to be. And looking at his journey as a captain, it’s been wonderful to share the dressing room alongside him, where he understands players very well,” Shahrukh told news agency IANS.
Gill’s leadership journey has come with considerable responsibility at a relatively young age. Shahrukh believes his ability to read situations and consider multiple tactical possibilities has been central to his development as a captain.
“He is somebody who is very tactical. Doesn’t look like much when you see from the outside. But as teammates, when you see him every day at practise and in the game, his mind is constantly running on what to do,” he said.
Gill’s strength, Shahrukh added, lies in the number of options he is able to consider before making decisions.
“He has got so many options in his head which he more often than not chooses the right thing. And to be playing under him is a pleasure.”
The comments come after a difficult IPL 2026 campaign for Shahrukh. Retained by Gujarat Titans for Rs 4 crore, he struggled to make a substantial impact and eventually lost his place in the playing XI midway through the season.
His fortunes were different in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, where he played a key role in his team’s title-winning campaign. For Shahrukh, the contrasting experiences underline the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket and the need for players to maintain perspective through difficult periods.
“IPL is always the best league in the world. And to be a part of it and to be playing for the last 6-7 years, I feel very fortunate and lucky. Because the level in which the players are in terms of mindset is the ultimate level for any youngster to play. And from there, obviously, you want to play for the country. But yeah, I’ve had tremendous years and some bad years as well,” he said.
“And as a player, the more you get into sport and you understand the sport, it’s about the highs and the lows. You just can’t be high all the time or low all the time. There has to be a balance in both and I’m fortunate enough to be a part of it,” he added.
While Shahrukh has focused largely on domestic cricket following his IPL setback, his association with Gill and Gujarat Titans continues to be an important part of his T20 journey.
With another IPL season on the horizon, the Tamil Nadu batter will look to carry the confidence from his TNPL campaign into India’s premier T20 competition and produce a stronger showing.
