Actor Confessed Affair With Maid Before Wedding, Sent Divorce Papers After Wife’s Miscarriage, Later Left Second Wife For Her

A veteran actor’s first marriage began with a last-minute confession about an affair with his maid, ended amid infidelity and pregnancy loss.

Acclaimed actor Om Puri confessed to would-be wife Seema Kapoor that he had been involved in an affair with their house help just one day before their wedding. He took her aside near a river in Jhalawar to tell her.

Seema still went ahead with the wedding. She said the invitations had already been sent and she did not have the courage to cancel the marriage just a day before it was due to take place.

Their marriage lasted only around eight months. Seema later alleged that Om became involved with journalist Nandita while she was pregnant and eventually told her he wanted a divorce.

Seema said she found love letters and Nandita’s stuff among Om’s belongings after he left for a film shoot. She was pregnant at the time and said the discovery left her shattered.

Seema left for her mother’s home in Rajasthan when she was about three months pregnant. She later lost the baby, saying the child died in her womb when she was five months pregnant.

After losing the baby, Seema said Om sent her Rs 25,000 through his secretary. She refused the money, saying what was seen as ego was actually her self-respect.

Seema’s brother, actor Annu Kapoor, wanted to take legal action against Om Puri over what had happened. She refused, saying she did not want the relationship to be destroyed further by a legal battle.

Seema eventually began writing letters to the child she had lost. She said she even wrote imagined replies from the baby’s perspective, using writing to cope with her grief.

Om Puri later married Nandita in 1993, but that marriage also fell apart. Nandita filed a complaint against him in 2013 alleging assault, while Om denied the allegations.
