While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter India, Farhan recalled that 10 days before Dil Chahta Hai’s planned shoot, Saif Ali Khan ran into a date issue after the schedule of another film shifted. With pre-production already complete and the sets being built, Farhan said the possibility of losing Saif left him extremely stressed.
“Saif suddenly had some date issue where another film that he was gonna do, the dates shifted, and he was kind of half in, half out on that. So he was in a bit of a spot, and he had to leave the film. And everybody tried to convince him, like. And for me, my head was destroyed, because when I met him, when we got into it, there was nobody else who could have played that part. It was just impossible,” he said.

While narrating the incident, Farhan made a remark that immediately stood out. He said that Saif was about to quit almost 10 days before the shoot was scheduled to begin. He added that “seems to be a pattern nowadays.”
“So that was true heartbreak for me when, just 10 days—maybe not 10 days, I think it was maybe about a month away from filming, which seems to be a pattern nowadays,” said Farhan, before adding, “Not just with me.”

The interviewer laughed at the comment, and Farhan followed it with, “Right, aisa bhi hota hai.”
The remark has now caught attention because of the ongoing controversy surrounding Don 3. Ranveer Singh, who was announced as the lead of Don 3 in 2023, later exited the project after the film reportedly went through delays and scheduling issues. The fallout subsequently turned into a dispute between Ranveer and Farhan’s Excel Entertainment, with the matter also reaching the Federation of Western India Cine Employees.
Farhan did not mention Ranveer or Don 3 during this particular conversation. However, the timing of the remark has led to speculation that “seems to be a pattern nowadays” could have been a subtle reference to his recent experience with Don 3.
Farhan Akhtar On Saif Ali Khan Returning To Dil Chahta Hai
Coming back to Saif Ali Khan, Farhan Akhtar said, “But anyway, that was happening. And Aamir and everyone tried to speak to him, but I think he was in a bit of a fix, and also under a tremendous amount of pressure. But Aamir just turned to me and he said, ‘Listen, there’s not enough time to cast anybody else. All the work is done. Pre-production is done. Everybody’s ready to shoot. Sets are being built. Toh ab agar Saif nahi kar raha hai, toh you’re gonna have to do it, yaar. There’s nobody else.’ I was like, ‘Me?’ And that gave me great motivation to try and convince Saif even more.”
“But yeah, eventually it worked out, which is great. And it just had to be him. And thank God. I don’t know how, what—how fate aligned and what happened—but he was finally in the film, and I couldn’t be happier,” recalled Farhan.
During the conversation, Farhan also said, “I really feel that roles, films have destinies of who they get cast with. You know, that the script resonates with a certain energy, and then you find an actor who resonates at that same frequency with it, and they just connect.”
