Govinda Joined Adnan Sami’s Lift Karadey Shoot Without Rehearsal Or Costume Change: ‘No Money Was Invested’
Govinda joined Adnan Sami’s Lift Karadey shoot without rehearsing or even changing his costume, because the music label did not want to invest in the song.

Adnan Sami’s song Lift Karadey went on to become one of his best-known pop songs, but his music label initially had little faith in it. The singer has revealed that Magnasound called the track “sadak chaap”, questioned why he wanted to make it after a string of successful songs, and eventually refused to fund its music video.
Adnan Sami shared the story in a recent interview with Zoom, recalling that the label had a very different idea for his next song. After Kabhi Toh Nazar Milao and Barsaat became hits, Magnasound wanted him to make another romantic number. Sami, however, had other plans.

He suggested Lift Karadey, a fun, peppy song that did not fit the image the label had in mind for him at the time. Instead of backing the idea, the team questioned why he wanted to move away from the more “classy” songs he had already delivered.
He recalled, “Then everyone looked at me and said, “What are you talking about?” I said, “Lift Karadey is a nice, peppy song.” He said, “What are you talking about? This is completely a roadside kind of song. Where are the classy songs like ‘Kabhi Toh Nazar Milao’ and ‘Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein’ (Barsaat), and where is this song?” I said, “Listen to me. I make and sing all kinds of songs.””
The disagreement dragged on for around six months. Adnan Sami said Magnasound was convinced that the song would not work and did not want to spend money on its video.
That left Sami and his team with very little to work with. They decided to shoot the “Lift Karadey” video in a guerrilla format, taking the production to the streets without the kind of budget or permissions usually associated with a music video.
Adnan added, “The argument went on for almost six months, and they were not convinced at all. They felt that it wouldn’t work and didn’t want to invest any money in it. We literally shot the video in a guerrilla format. Guerrilla filmmaking is when you go out onto the streets with virtually no budget and without any permissions. That’s how we shot the video.”
Lift Karadey was later remembered as one of the popular Indian pop songs of the early 2000s. Sami composed and sang the track, while Riaz-Ur-Rehman Saghar wrote its lyrics.
The music video also featured Govinda in a cameo. Adnan Sami has revealed that the actor joined the shoot without rehearsing and did not even change his costume, making his appearance another memorable part of the video.
