The researchers are quick to point out that DeepSeek is not the sole AI model used by these hackers but its use has increased in the community which is obviously going to raise the alarm bells over at the national security office in the US.

Using AI to double up attacks

Having cheaper and open-source AI models not only makes their task easier but also gives them access at a lower cost which becomes equally attractive for these hackers. “DeepSeek is the AI of choice for Chinese hackers because it’s relatively powerful with very low cyber guardrails,” said Charles Li, chief analyst at Team T5. Li also mentioned that while the AI models from the west are popular and more people want to use them, the security checks are more intensive which makes them less appealing to the hackers. “Western models are highly sought-after but their guardrails are much more strict and require a lot more effort to bypass,” he adds.

These AI models have already made an impact as hackers use them to attack email systems, or even used to create codes that help in exploring more robust devices and models.
