Veteran actor Hema Malini has shared her views on ageing and cosmetic procedures, saying she sees no harm in turning to aesthetic treatments when they are genuinely necessary. However, she believes there should always be a sense of balance, particularly for those constantly in the public eye.

Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, Hema said that taking care of one’s appearance is important, but trying to fight ageing completely is not the answer.

“Ageing Gracefully Is Very Important”

For Hema Malini, maintaining oneself and accepting the natural process of ageing can go hand in hand. She believes cosmetic procedures can be considered when there is a genuine need, but cautions against taking things too far.

“Ageing gracefully is very important because you have to maintain yourself. If there is something genuinely necessary for your appearance, one can definitely try it. As long as you are in the public eye, you have to be presentable. That’s all. But don’t overdo anything,” she said.

Her perspective is rooted in moderation: looking polished and feeling confident is important, but so is knowing when enough is enough.

Hema Malini On Dressing With Dignity

The actor also spoke about personal style and the importance of carrying oneself with dignity. While she believes women should dress well and make an effort with their appearance, she expressed concern about what she sees as excessive exposure in contemporary fashion.

“Even if you wear something simple, be dignified,” Hema said, adding that women can look stylish without necessarily revealing too much.

From Movie Stars to Constantly Photographed Celebrities

Hema Malini also reflected on how dramatically celebrity culture has changed since her time as a leading actor. According to her, stars today live under far greater public scrutiny, with smartphones and cameras making privacy increasingly difficult.

She pointed out that actors now have to think carefully about how they appear every time they step outside, from their clothes and accessories to the way they walk, because photographs can be taken and circulated instantly.

In her view, celebrities of her generation did not experience this kind of constant visibility.

“Youngsters Today Want Quick Fame”

The actor also suggested that the current culture of instant publicity has changed the way fame is pursued. Hema believes many young people today are looking for quick recognition and are willing to do almost anything to remain visible.

She contrasted this with her own experience in cinema, when actors would spend weeks working on a film before waiting to see how audiences responded after its release.

For her, the focus was always on giving her best performance rather than constantly seeking publicity.

How Hema Malini Built an Identity Beyond Films

Hema Malini believes her continued relevance comes from never limiting herself to one identity. Alongside acting, she continued pursuing classical dance and eventually entered politics, taking on responsibilities as a Member of Parliament and remaining actively involved in her constituency.

She says these different chapters of her life have helped shape how people remember her today—not just as a film star, but also as a classical dancer and public figure.

For Hema Malini, ageing gracefully appears to mean much more than simply maintaining one’s appearance. It is also about evolving, staying engaged and continuing to build new identities at every stage of life.
