Shravan Fasting 2026: Give This Vrat Wali Makhana And Sprouts Chaat Recipe A Try
If you want to bring a bold pinch of flavour to your fasting food menu, this makhana chaat recipe should be a must try!

During Shravan, many people will observe fasts that call for light, sattvic and easily digestible meals, often without regular grains or heavy spices. This fasting‑approved makhana chaat is designed exactly for those days: it keeps you full without weighing you down, and uses only vrat‑friendly ingredients.
Makhana (fox nuts) is a traditional fasting staple, low in fat, rich in complex carbohydrates and a good source of protein, fibre, magnesium and antioxidants, which help sustain energy and support heart health through long fasting hours.

Sprouted green moong adds a powerful plant‑based protein boost, along with fibre, iron and B‑vitamins that aid digestion, prevent constipation and keep blood sugar stable. Together, makhana and sprouted moong create a balanced base that is gentle on the stomach yet nourishing enough to replace a full meal.
The addition of bhuna chana and roasted peanuts further increases protein and healthy fats, making this chaat especially useful if you’re fasting for the entire day or working while observing vrats.
Lightly seasoned with black salt and chaat masala, and brightened with fresh cucumber, coriander and pomegranate, this dish feels festive rather than restrictive. It’s quick to assemble, easy to digest and perfect for sharing at home or carrying as a tiffin during Sawan, so you can honour your fast without compromising on taste or nutrition. Makhana Chaat Recipe
Ingredients:
* 1 cup makhana, dry roasted
* 1 cup sprouted green moong, steamed
* ½ cup bhuna chana
* 2 tbsp roasted peanuts
* 1 small onion, finely chopped
* 1 small cucumber, finely chopped
* 2–3 green chilies, finely chopped
* Salt, to taste
* ½ tsp black salt
* 1 tsp chaat masala
* 1-2 tbsp green chutney
* 1 tbsp tamarind chutney
* Fresh coriander leaves
* Pomegranate seeds
* Bhujiya or sev, optional
Method:
- Prep the baseIn a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup dry‑roasted makhana, 1 cup steamed sprouted green moong, ½ cup bhuna chana and 2 tbsp roasted peanuts. Toss gently so the textures mix evenly.
- Add fresh crunchAdd 1 small finely chopped onion, 1 small finely chopped cucumber and 2–3 finely chopped green chilies to the bowl. If your fast allows onion, keep it; otherwise, skip the onion and increase cucumber slightly.
- SeasonSprinkle salt to taste, ½ tsp black salt (sendha namak) and 1 tsp chaat masala over the mixture. Toss well so every bite is evenly seasoned. Adjust black salt and chaat masala if you prefer a tangier, more “chaat‑like” punch.
- Add chutneysDrizzle 1–2 tbsp green chutney and 1 tbsp tamarind chutney over the chaat. Mix gently but thoroughly; you want the chutneys to coat the makhana and sprouts without making them soggy. Add a little more chutney if you like it more tangy or spicy.
- Finish and serveFold in a handful of fresh coriander leaves and 2–3 tbsp pomegranate seeds for sweetness and colour. If your fast allows, top with a light sprinkle of bhujiya or sev for extra crunch; otherwise, serve as is.
