Mumbai has long been known as India’s financial powerhouse, a city of relentless energy where business and ambition rarely pause. But a new global ranking suggests the city is also becoming an unlikely favourite for a very different kind of traveller: the workcation crowd.

Mumbai has secured a place in the 2026 Work From Anywhere Index by International Workplace Group (IWG), emerging as the only Indian city to feature in the global rankings. With a score of 77, the city has reportedly outperformed destinations such as London and Miami, reinforcing its appeal for travellers looking to combine work with leisure.

The rise of the “workcation” has transformed the way people travel. It is no longer just about answering emails beside a pool or taking a video call from a beachside café. For many hybrid professionals, it means extending a holiday by a few days, working remotely from another city, or choosing destinations where productivity and exploration can exist side by side.

What Makes Mumbai Great For Workcations?

At first glance, Mumbai may not seem like the obvious choice. It is crowded and fast-paced. Yet, that very rhythm appears to work in its favour. Ask loyalists and they’ll tell you how the city offers many practical advantages and lifestyle experiences that appeal to remote workers. Reliable internet, an expanding network of co-working spaces, varied accommodation options and extensive public transport make it easier to settle into a temporary work routine.

Beyond convenience, Mumbai offers something equally valuable: experiences beyond the laptop screen. A workday can end with a sunset walk along Marine Drive, dinner at a Bandra restaurant, an art gallery visit in Kala Ghoda or a weekend exploring heritage neighbourhoods and bustling markets. The city’s diversity of food, culture and entertainment gives travellers reasons to stay longer rather than rushing home after a short trip.

IWG’s research, conducted among 2,000 hybrid workers in the UK and the US, found that nearly half planned to extend holidays into remote working breaks in 2026, while many had already worked from travel destinations without taking additional leave. Although the findings are not specific to Indian workers, they point to a growing global shift in how people combine work and travel.

Mumbai’s inclusion in the index also reflects a broader change in the workcation conversation. The trend is no longer limited to tropical beaches or mountain retreats. Today, remote workers are looking for destinations that offer reliable infrastructure, flexible workspaces, good food, easy transport and meaningful experiences after office hours.

Globally, Bangkok topped the 2026 Work From Anywhere Index, followed by cities such as Tokyo, Barcelona, Porto, Vancouver, Budapest, Naples, Medellín, Lisbon and Seoul. Mumbai may not have made the top ten, but its presence on the list signals that India’s commercial capital is increasingly being viewed as more than just a business destination.
