Twist In Indian Cricket: Laxman ‘Not Interested’ In Replacing Agarkar As Chief Selector
VVS Laxman is a potential candidate to replace Ajit Agarar as the men’s chief selector, but he’s reportedly not interested yet.

Indian men’s cricket chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s tenure is slowly coming to a head, leading to rising speculation by the day. His current tenure will end in September 2026, which means the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has a decision to make — continue with Agarkar and reward him for his stint so far, or replace him with someone new, who’ll have to pick the squad for the all-important 2027 World Cup.
Early in August, reports came through that extending Agarkar’s contract is not a given. BCCI was said to be looking at VVS Laxman, an Indian batting great and the current chief of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, as a replacement. However, fresh reports claim that Laxman is not interested in the job, yet.

Situations like these can change fast in Indian cricket. Rahul Dravid was never interested in becoming the head coach but did; then he didn’t want to stick around post the 2023 World Cup but did anyway after some convincing from Rohit Sharma. Similarly, all options remain open for the selector’s job. Unsurprisingly, other former Indian cricketers are also in the fray for the role if Agarkar doesn’t get the extension.
Laxman was also in the running to become the head coach in 2024 but refused it, and ended up taking the job at the CoE for two years. On Sunday, the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia was at the CoE to speak to him and take stock of the situation of a spike in injuries in the men’s team.
The Indian head coach job has never been easy to sell. Despite the slight pressure on Gautam Gambhir, candidates aren’t lining up because of how travel-intensive and highly scrutinised the role is. Whatever changes happen at the top of the Indian cricket, will not be easy and smooth-sailing.
