BCCI Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman and board secretary Devajit Saikia have said that the institute collects the fitness status of players and sends them to the selection committee and the head coach, adding that the selector is the one who reaches out to the CoE for the same.
Ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah suffered an impact injury during the ODI series against England in July, forcing him to miss the final game at Lord’s. The CoE assessed that he would recover in time for the Sri Lanka Tests and he was included in the team with an asterisk indicating that his participation was ‘subject to fitness clearance’.

But the injury turned out to be more serious than anticipated and the medical team decided against taking any risks, leading to Bumrah’s release from the team.
“The process is that the selector reaches out to the COE asking for the fitness status report. And we collect the current fitness status and send a report to the selection committee chairman or chairperson in the women’s selection committee, with a copy to the head coach of both the teams and BCCI,” Laxman said while speaking to the media.
“So, Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan were going to be picked for Sri Lanka subject to fitness clearance. And as I told you before, you assess them, you move them from one stage to the next stage and if the progression is slow, you communicate to the selection committee chairman and the head coach, which is happening,” Laxman added.
Sudharsan, who struck two hundreds in two ‘A’ Tests before suffering an injury during the second game against Sri Lanka ‘A’, has since been undergoing rehab at the CoE.
Like Bumrah, Sudharsan was selected subject to fitness clearance but was ruled out on Saturday, August 8, after failing to recover in time.
