Star Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel was arrested and sent to three-day police custody for alleged rape of a medical student, weeks after the Calcutta High Court had directed the police to do the same.

Porel was taken into custody in Hooghly and arrested after questioning. He was then sent for a medical examination before being produced at the Chinsurah court.

A young woman alleged that Abishek had a sexual relationship with her after promising to marry her. She further accused him of blackmailing her by threatening to circulate objectionable pictures.

A case was filed against Abishek under 19 sections, most of which were non-bailable offences.

“There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today,” Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh told PTI.

During the previous hearing, Calcutta High Court Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed the Magra Police Station in Hooghly to seize all electronic devices, including the mobile phone in Abishek’s possession.

The police were also asked to submit a report detailing the steps taken by them.

The case came up for hearing on Tuesday, August 11. During the proceedings, Magra Police Station informed the judge that Abishek had been arrested and would be produced before the Chinsurah Court.

“Abishek illegally confined the complainant. He denied her food and deliberately kept her isolated. As a result… the complainant became physically weak and was unable to walk properly,” the FIR against Abishek read.

The complaint alleges an incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026, claiming that the woman was confined and denied food, leaving her weak and in need of medical attention. These are allegations contained in the complaint and haven’t been established in court.

The complainant alleged that she was in a relationship with Abishek and that their families had even discussed marriage. But as per her complaint, the relationship deteriorated after she learnt about his involvement with other women, leading to their breakup.

The matter came before the Calcutta High Court after the complainant approached it, after which the court directed the police to take steps towards arresting Abishek as part of the investigation.

But the cricketer has denied the allegations.
