A 21-year-old digital creator from Mumbai has alleged that she was assaulted and threatened by an Uber driver following a dispute over an additional Rs 40 toll payment at the end of a journey from Mahalaxmi to Nerul, according to a report in The Times of India.

The woman, identified as Shivanii and a resident of Wadala (East), later lodged a complaint at the Nerul police station. Police subsequently registered a non-cognisable offence against the driver under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to voluntarily causing hurt and intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace.

Fare Dispute At The End Of The Trip

According to TOI report, Shivanii had booked an Uber cab through the app for travel from Mahalaxmi to Nerul on April 22.

In a social media post shared last week, she claimed that the fare initially displayed on the app was Rs 460. By the time the ride concluded in Nerul at around 4 pm, the fare had been revised to Rs 501.

After reaching her destination, she paid the amount online. However, the driver allegedly demanded an additional Rs 40 in cash towards toll charges.

Shivanii said she refused because she believed the toll fee was already included in the final fare shown on the application.

Argument Allegedly Escalated

The woman claimed the driver continued insisting on the additional payment, leading to an argument.

According to her account, the driver attempted to stop her from leaving the vehicle and became increasingly aggressive after she exited the cab without paying the extra amount. She further alleged that during the confrontation, the driver moved close to her face. Feeling threatened, she pushed him away in self-defence, she claimed.

Allegations Of Assault And Intimidation

Shivanii alleged that the driver then became violent, slapped her and twisted her hand during the altercation.

She also claimed that he continued to intimidate her and allegedly threatened her by saying, “Aur Ek Maar Ke Dikhaun Kya?” (Should I hit you again?) during the confrontation.

According to Shivanii, what began as a disagreement over a relatively small amount of money quickly escalated into a serious safety concern.

Colleagues And Bystanders Step In

Following the incident, Shivanii said she contacted colleagues from her workplace, who arrived at the scene to support her and ensure her safety. She also claimed that bystanders who witnessed the altercation intervened in an effort to calm the situation and help resolve the dispute.

Despite the intervention of others, the driver allegedly continued threatening her and showed no remorse, according to her account.

Police Register Case

The incident occurred on April 22, though details came to light publicly after Shivanii recounted her experience on social media last week.

Based on her complaint, Nerul police registered a non-cognisable offence against the accused driver and booked him under applicable BNS provisions relating to voluntarily causing hurt and intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.
