Former Rajasthan state captain Mahipal Lomror has accepted an opportunity to play for Surrey in the County Championship. The ex-Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batting all-rounder will travel to England on Sunday to join the team after what he described as an unexpected call-up.

Lomror told Sportstarhe received a surprise call from Surrey director of men’s cricket Alec Stewart on August 8, with the county looking for a middle-order batter capable of contributing with left-arm spin. He was scheduled to travel to South Africa on August 9 for Mumbai Indians’ development project, and had to pull out of the trip after Surrey’s approach.

The 26-year-old told the publication that he was unsure how Stewart came across his name, but suspects MI, which is partnered with Surrey for the Hundred, may have played a role.

“For any cricketer, the County Championship is a huge opportunity, and I am glad that I will get to play alongside some senior players and gain experience,” he said.

Lomror has played 63 first-class matches, scoring 3,836 runs at 42.62, including 10 centuries and 17 fifties.  He also has a triple-century against his name, against Uttarakhand during the 2024-25 season.

He has also played 40 IPL matches for Rajasthan Royals, RCB and MI. He was a key cog in RCB’s late rush to qualification in the 2024 season.

At the Bengaluru-based franchise, he was appreciated for his ability to hit spin in the middle-overs. Surrey would present a different challenge and offer a unique preparation for the Indian domestic season.

While his bowling has been rarely utilised by club and state, Lomror used to work on it every IPL season, developing himself as an economical all-rounder who can chip in with a few overs every match.

Surrey currently sit seventh in Division One with 91 points from eight matches and have six games remaining, beginning against Nottinghamshire at The Oval on August 20.
