Mumbai is set for a major overhaul of some of its ageing road infrastructure, with four new overbridges being constructed from Dadar to Ghatkopar to ease congestion and improve east-west connectivity across the city.

The projects, jointly undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), involve an investment of around Rs 1,179 crore. The four bridges are expected to be completed in phases over the next two years, providing relief at some of Mumbai’s busiest railway crossings and traffic bottlenecks.

The most notable project is the replacement of the 112-year-old Elphinstone Bridge with Mumbai’s first double-decker road overbridge.

Mumbai’s First Double-Decker Road Overbridge

The old Elphinstone Bridge has already been demolished to make way for the new structure, which will also form part of the Sewri-Worli Connector. The double-decker bridge will have two four-lane decks. The lower deck will carry local traffic across the railway tracks, while the upper deck will connect with the upcoming road connector. Footpaths will also be provided on the lower level. Foundation work and girder assembly are currently underway, with the project targeted for completion by November 2026.

Dadar’s Century-Old Tilak Bridge To Get 6 Lanes

At Dadar, the existing century-old Tilak Bridge is being replaced with a 600-metre-long cable-stayed bridge. The new structure will have six traffic lanes- three times the capacity of the current two-lane bridge. A structural audit conducted in 2019 had recommended replacing the existing bridge. Located near Dadar railway station, the bridge is a crucial east-west link and is expected to reduce congestion around one of Mumbai’s busiest transport hubs. The construction is being carried out in two phases. The first arm is around 70 per cent complete and is expected to open by April 2027. The existing bridge will then be demolished and a parallel arm will be constructed.

Byculla’s Y Bridge Gets A 916-Metre Makeover

Mumbai’s century-old Y Bridge in Byculla is also being replaced, with a 916-metre cable-stayed bridge planned along the Byculla-Dadar corridor. One of the biggest engineering challenges has been launching a 1,500-tonne steel span above the Central Vegetable Market without disrupting market operations or railway traffic. The new bridge is expected to open by December 2026 and will feature a dual-carriageway configuration aimed at improving traffic flow along one of south Mumbai’s busiest corridors.

Ghatkopar To Get A New Six-Lane Cable-Stayed Bridge

Another major project is underway in Ghatkopar, where a new six-lane cable-stayed bridge is being constructed along the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road across LBS Marg. The bridge will connect Ghatkopar East and West and is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore. Once completed, it will be the first cable-stayed road bridge in Mumbai’s suburbs. Construction is being carried out in phases to keep traffic moving, with the project targeted for completion in 2027.
