Former India cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath has said that the Centre of Excellence can only inform the team as to what the physical state of a cricketer is, but the final decision to play him lies with the captain, coach and the selector, wondering if Jasprit Bumrah’s workload wasn’t managed properly by the team.

The growing list of absentees has raised concerns over India’s injury management and rehab setup.

“I don’t know who made the decision. COE will not make the selection, right? They will just say he is in this state and can play these matches and his body is in this state,” Badrinath said while speaking on his YouTube channel.

“But I think the captain, coach and selectors are taking the decision. COE only passes the information. They aren’t selectors,” Badrinath said.

The former India player cautioned against attributing every injury in the team to the same problem as well, noting that the cricketers have suffered from different setbacks. Badrinath stressed that while some injuries are unavoidable in professional sport, effective workload management, fitness and regular monitoring are crucial to keeping cricketers fit and available.

“I don’t have an immediate answer to the root cause of so many injuries. It’s important to see what kind of injuries these are. In high-level professional sport, injuries are common,” Badrinath said.

“Sai Sudharsan got hit by a ball; with Bumrah, it’s a chronic injury due to being overused and fitness isn’t Sundar’s forte; he is injury-prone. His fitness needs a lot of work,” Badrinath added.
