He said the pitch had become much better for the batters than it was on Day 1.

“I think the wicket is much better than before, than the first day. I think it will keep getting better and better. And I think on this wicket, if we play normal cricketing shots, that will be better for us,” he said.

Tanzid is just the second Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century against Australia after Shahriar Nafees in 2006, who made 138 in Fatullah.

Tanzid’s historic hundred extended Bangladesh’s dominant start to the contest, with Australia still playing catch-up despite winning the toss and opting to bat first.

Bangladesh right-arm pacer Hasan Mahmud sliced through Australia’s batting, finishing with a six-wicket haul as the hosts were bowled out for 198 in 53 overs. Only Steve Smith offered some resistance, scoring 71 off 109 balls with the help of seven fours and a six.

The next-best effort came from opener Jake Weatherald, who made 23.
