The session comes at a crucial stage in the 15-year-old’s burgeoning career. Sooryavanshi has been appointed East Zone’s vice-captain for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, with experienced wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan all set to lead the team.

“He hasn’t been made the captain. He has only been made the vice-captain. The captain is Ishan Kishan. Besides, Ishan is a wicketkeeper, so he will be involved throughout the day,” East Zone selector Pravanjan Mullick said while speaking to Cricbuzz.

The selectors have also highlighted Sooryavanshi’s previous captaincy experience. He has served as Bihar’s vice-captain in first-class cricket and was part of India’s leadership group during their U19 World Cup campaign.

“This is a great opportunity for him to take on the responsibility of being vice-captain in the Duleep Trophy. He wants to do well for the country and we believe giving young cricketers responsibility is important,” Mullick said.

Meanwhile, Sooryavanshi has shifted his focus to red-ball cricket. Since returning from the Zimbabwe tour in July, the teenage batting sensation has been spending considerable time at the Rajasthan Royals Academy in Talegaon, near Nagpur, fine-tuning his red-ball skills.

The Talegaon facility is the team’s own version of centre of excellence and Sooryavanshi, along with a group of Rajasthan Royals teammates, is gearing up for the multi-day format.
