India are all set to take on Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series starting Saturday, August 15, at the Galle International Stadium, with the second match scheduled to be played at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.

India’s first Tests in Sri Lanka were played in Colombo and Kandy, with Galle joining the list of venues in 1998. The Indian team played its first Test at the venue in 2001 and Galle has featured on every subsequent tour since.

India have played five Tests at the venue and won two, with three others ending in defeats for the visitors. But the last time India played at the venue, they pulled off a comprehensive win.

Ace batter Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat first. India lost Abhinav Mukund in the eighth over, but Shikhar Dhawan (190) and Cheteshwar Pujara (153) built a match-winning 153-run partnership to take India to a safe total.

On Day 1 of the match, Dhawan smashed over 100 runs in the post-lunch session.

India reached 286/3 before Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane (57) put on 137 runs for the fourth wicket.

India moved to 432/5 before Ravichandran Ashwin and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha added 59 runs for the sixth wicket.

India soon found themselves at 517/8 before Hardik Pandya (50) and Mohammed Shami added 62 runs for the ninth wicket and riding on their effort, India were bowled out for a whopping 600.

In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 291, despite half-centuries from Upul Tharanga, Angelo Mathews and Dilruwan Perera. Ravindra Jadeja picked three wickets.

But India didn’t impose a follow-on and went on to inflict more misery on Sri Lanka. Mukund scored 81, Kohli remained unbeaten on 103 and India declared on 240/3, leaving the hosts to chase down a whopping 550.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 245, despite fifties from Dimuth Karunaratne and Niroshan Dickwella. Jadeja and Ashwin picked three wickets apiece. Dhawan was awarded Player of the Match for his 190-run knock.
