It’s been a steady progress from Devdutt Padikkal and KL Rahul thus far since India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck on the second delivery of their innings. With three fours, Padikkal is batting on 21 off 30 while Rahul has also struck three boundaries in his score of 13 off 28.

So we are all set for Day 2 now. Remember: this is not a first-class match, so each team is batting 90 overs on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3, each team will bat 45 overs. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal will being India’s reply after Sri Lanka’s 363/8 in 90 overs on the opening day.

Ravindra Jadeja, meanwhile, initially did not attack the stumps consistently enough. Once he began doing so, however, he found results and finished with two wickets. His figures were respectable on paper, but the veteran spinner looked noticeably rusty during his 15 overs.

Manav Suthar was India’s most economical bowler and made an important contribution with the wicket of Rasantha. The left-arm spinner deceived the opener in flight as he came down the track but failed to reach the pitch of the ball. Suthar later struck again with the second new ball, firing a full delivery in from an angle to remove the well-set Dinusha.

Sri Laka Cricket XI captain Sonal Dainusha was the other major batting highlight of the day, hitting 52 from 72 balls. He showed sound technique and was the only middle-order batter who appeared particularly comfortable reading Kuldeep Yadav from the wrist. He also produced one of the shots of the day, hitting the spinner for a regal straight six.

Dinusha had added another notable performance to his recent record after scoring 92 against the West Indies in a Test match. With Ramesh Mendis for company, Dinusha added 64 for the seventh wicket. Mendis contributed 32 from 49.

Sri Lanka’s young batting group enjoyed a highly productive day, particularly on a largely benign Nondescripts Cricket Club surface. Opener Nishan Fernando was among the standout performers, making 66 from 65 balls. Having recently featured in Tests during Sri Lanka’s tour of the West Indies, Fernando showed little discomfort against India’s experienced pace attack.

Mohammed Siraj went wicketless for 44 runs in 13 overs, while Prasidh Krishna conceded 32 runs in eight overs without taking a wicket. Gurnoor Brar was the most incisive of India’s pacers, finishing with 1 for 49 from 12 overs.

Fernando and Ravindu Rasantha put together 110 for the opening wicket, scoring briskly and forcing India’s bowlers to search for answers. The partnership ended through a run-out following a mix-up between the two batters. Rasantha contributed 71 from 143 deliveries.

Kuldeep finished with 2 for 76 from 18 overs after gradually finding greater control. He had conceded 29 runs in his opening five-over spell but subsequently altered his pace and began asking more questions of the Sri Lankan batters. His first breakthrough came when Ahan Wickramasinghe attempted a sweep against a delivery that bounced slightly more than expected. The resulting top edge was comfortably taken by Gurnoor Brar at short fine leg. He then claimed Anjala Bandara with an arm-ball that skidded through and struck the batter on the pads.

His late spell provided India with a much-needed change of momentum.

For head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill, the day will provide plenty of material for review. Gill did not take the field after suffering an impact injury during a training session, leaving Gambhir to watch an Indian attack that appeared short of rhythm after a five-week gap from red-ball cricket. The fast bowlers, in particular, showed understandable signs of rust, while India’s spinners eventually accounted for most of Sri Lanka’s wickets but did not initially pose a sustained threat.
