Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan is happy about the fresh crop of fast bowlers coming through the country but has been most impressed with Punjab’s Gurnoor Brar. Zaheer said that ‘on potential’, Gurnoor can have a long and exciting international career, praising the selectors for fast-tracking him.
Gurnoor, who plays for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, was called up to the Indian team for the three ODIs against Afghanistan. His selection seemed out of the blue because he didn’t have as much experience as some of his competition in the IPL, but the quick was brilliant.

He took seven wickets in the three matches, and then followed it up with a 10-wicket match haul for India ‘A’ against Sri Lanka ‘A’ in a first-class game. He also took four wickets in the first two ODIs against England.
“It’s good to see a young crop of fast bowlers coming through that bowl high speeds,” Zaheer said in an interaction with journalist Vimal Kumar. “I believe Gurnoor Brar is the one who has the ability to have a good and lengthy career. It’s good that he has been fast-tracked. Even when I spent some time with him, I could see exciting potential in him. We have to wait and see how his career materialises eventually, but on potential, he has impressed me the most,” he added.
Gurnoor’s strengths are his pace and height, which make it uncomfortable for even the best of batters. The third ODI in England showed some of his weaknesses, especially his tendency to spray it without control, and he conceded 97 runs without a wicket.
It showed that he still has some polishing to do. With most tearaway quicks in India struggling with a spate of injuries, Gurnoor will have windows to show that he’s different.
If he can maintain some consistency, he could be on the flight to South Africa for the 2027 World Cup.
