At the centre of the narrative is a Muslim family that moves into a mansion previously occupied by a Hindu family. They soon discover that the house’s elderly Hindu matriarch has stayed behind and refuses to abandon the home she considers her own.

Her presence initially creates friction, but the equation between her and the new occupants begins to change with time. The story uses their relationship to examine displacement, communal divisions and the human bonds that survive political upheaval.

Batwara 1947 To Clash With Awarapan 2

Apart from Sunny, Preity and Shabana, the cast includes Karan Deol, Kanika Kapur and Abhimanyu Singh. Aamir Khan Productions has backed the project, with Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit serving as producers.

The film also reunites director Rajkumar Santoshi with Sunny after their earlier collaborations. AR Rahman has composed the music, while Javed Akhtar has penned the lyrics.

Batwara 1947 is scheduled to hit theatres on August 14. It will face Emraan Hashmi’s much-awaited Awarapan 2 at the box office.
